The Vancouver Desktop Publishing Centre was established in 1986 by a book publisher who understood that computer technology could make book production much more accessible to small publishers and individual authors. At Vancouver Desktop we combine new technology with over 30 years of experience in book publishing to help self-publishers produce high-quality books at a reasonable cost. The company is based in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, and we have a branch office in Montreal, but we have worked with self-publishers from all over Canada and the U.S. WHAT WE DO 1) Our work begins with a free consultation (in person, through email, or by phone) with the self-publisher, during which we go over the needs of the client and come up with the best options, particularly for printing and distribution of the book (see Printing and Binding). 2) After the consultation we provide an estimate of the cost of production of the book.
This estimate is based on the specifications listed under Getting an Estimate and can include: 3) Once the estimate is accepted, we provide sample designs for the page layout. We work in consulation with the self-publisher to arrive at a mutually acceptable layout and the design is approved. 4) Page layout then proceeds, after which the self-publisher is provided with a complete proof copy of the book. This proof will be proofread by the self-publisher and, if possible, by a professional editor (see Editorial Work). While the first proof is being proofread, we work on sample designs for the cover, which the self-publisher must approve. 5) When the first proof is returned to us we make necessary corrections and provide a new proof for final checking. The cover is also proofed at this point. 6) After final corrections are made, digital files are sent to the printer who then provides a printer's proof of the entire book plus cover. After this proof is checked by Vancouver Desktop and the self-publisher, the go-ahead is given to print the books. |
