Preparing your book for the printing house or e-book distributor

One of the main problems with self-published books is that they "look self-published," which means that they are poorly designed and the layout looks unprofessional. To achieve a clean, professional-looking book you need to be, or hire, a competent designer person who specializes in books. In addition to making your book look good and be easy and enjoyable to read, a designer will prepare the images for inclusion and prepare the files to send to the printing house.

Images in the book must be scanned at the correct resolution and size and, if necessary, enhanced using a computer program like Photoshop. See Including Images for more information about this.

In addition, the digital files that are sent to the printing house, POD service or e-book service must be compatible with the systems at that printing house. You should check with the printing house, POD service or e-book service before you begin the layout in order to make sure that the files you will be preparing will work at their end. A professional layout person will do this for you.
